FLAG emissions for a large food manufacturer
An SBTi-aligned full scope 1, 2, 3 (including FLAG) emissions footprint.
Oscar Mayer is a leading manufacturer of chilled food, supplying the top UK retailers, chains and food service across the UK.
Having previously supported Oscar Mayer with an ESG strategy and scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG emissions measurement Rawstone Consulting were the natural fit to support the business with preparing for their Science-Based Target commitment by measuring their forest, land and agriculture (FLAG) impacts. Key highlights from the project include:
Sourcing of emission factors. We worked with third party experts in this space to source suitable FLAG emission factors covering all key food types used by Oscar Mayer in their recipes. These factors are not widely available and we gained early access by beta testing CEDA by Watershed’s first dataset in this area.
Hybrid calculations. We worked closely with Oscar Mayer to obtain as much activity data as possible (i.e. product/packaging weight information) to make emissions calculations as accurate as possible whilst applying industry emission factors.
Retrospective application. We tested the impact of the new data approach on previous years’ data and finding this above Oscar Mayer’s restatement threshold of 5% conducted all the necessary calculations to revise their historic emissions.
Data presentation. We shared all the underlying data and calculations in a fully transparent and auditable format and produced multiple output summaries to show emissions a) as needed for GHG Protocol-aligned reporting; b) as needed for the SBTi application form; c) as needed to understand emission sources; and d) at the Group and site location.
